TTU supports V-Day activities
Rather than celebrating Valentine’s Day with chocolate and flowers this year, actors and activists at Tennessee Tech University will mark V-Day with a rally to raise awareness about sexual violence and three performances of “The Vagina Monologues.”
The rally, One Billion Rising, is part of a worldwide event to raise awareness about sexual violence. TTU’s rising will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, on the quad. It will include a one-mile walk/run and several speakers.
TTU will also host its biennial production of “The Vagina Monologues” Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 14-16. Each show will begin at 8 p.m. in the Backdoor Playhouse in the Jere Whitson Memorial Building on the quad. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 for TTU students.
All proceeds from the play will benefit the Tennessee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and VDay.org. The audience is advised that the production contains strong language and mature themes. It may not be suitable for children younger than 13.
In 2012, volunteers organized more than 5,800 5,800 V-Day benefit events around the world. To date, the V-Day movement has raised more than $90 million and reached more than 300 million people about violence against women and the efforts to end it.
