thumb kitchenAfter nearly a year of work, the first phase of renovations to the Tech Village apartments is complete, and Tennessee Tech University’s office of residential life is ready to show them off.

TTU will have an open house from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 22 at the Tech Village apartments. Tours of the rooms, snacks and a shuttle will be provided. The shuttle will pick up in front of Roaden University Center every 20 minutes and drop passengers off at Tech Village Apartment H-West beginning at 12:30 p.m.

“I think when people see the apartments, they’ll be pretty surprised,” said director of residential life Charlie Macke. “The old apartments were run down; the windows leaked sound; they weren’t very efficient.”

Renovations began last fall to the first eight buildings. By law, all on-campus apartments across Tennessee have to have sprinkler systems installed by 2014. Tennessee Tech chose to upgrade the buildings entirely, gutting each and rebuilding the apartments completely.

Previously, each apartment had one bedroom, with an additional small space for a study area. Now, there are one- and two-bedroom apartments. Some of the two bedroom apartments also have two bathrooms and are intended for four people.

The 32 renovated apartments will accommodate as many as 64 students.

Macke said the next phase of renovations should start in June, after the end of the academic year.
