Members of the Cumberland Quintet are Anne Thurmond, William Woodworth, Roger Martin, James Lotz and Jeremy Hansen.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This concert  has been canceled.

Join Tennessee Tech University’s Cumberland Quintet Feb. 9 for an evening of beautiful chamber music featuring works by composers from around the globe.

The 7:30 p.m. concert is free, open to the public and will be held in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building.

The group will perform "Petite Offrande Musicale" by Italian composer Nino Rota. Rota is best known for his film scores, which include "The Godfather." Also on the program is an excitingly rhythmic quintet entitled "Sechs Bagatellen" by Romanian-born composer Gyorgy Ligeti. Ligeti composed a wide variety of music, but is also best known for his compositions used in films, including "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Shining" and "Eyes Wide Shut.

The Cumberland Quintet will perform a transcription of Beethoven's "Five Pieces for Mechanical Organ." German composer Ludwig van Beethoven was one of many who wrote for the mechanical organ. This is a "player organ" that functions like a pipe organ but is operated by turning a crank. The pieces of music are encoded onto a barrel using metal pins and staples.

Also on the program is a quintet by French composer Claude Arrieu. While Arrieu entered the French Conservatory in 1924 with dreams of being a piano virtuoso, she soon found her voice as a composer. Like Rota and Ligeti, she wrote a wide variety of music, including music for French films and radio programs.

Established in 1972, the Cumberland Quintet has built a solid reputation for unique programming and fine musicianship. In residence at TTU, the group has toured extensively throughout the United States and in Europe, performing to a wide variety of audiences. Commanding a large repertoire of music from all periods, the group offers the standard woodwind classics as well as exciting modern works and lighter popular music.

With the 2009-10 season, the quintet marks its 37th year as an ensemble.  Current members of the Cumberland Quintet are Roger Martin, flute; William Woodworth, oboe; Anne Thurmond, clarinet; James Lotz, bassoon; and Jeremy Hansen, horn.

Special concerts and workshops for young audiences serve to introduce the instruments and to provide advice for young musicians. The Cumberland Quintet serves on the faculty of the Southeast Chamber Music Institute.  The ensemble has performed on live radio and television broadcasts and has been part of an educational public television series that has been distributed to several southeastern states. The quintet also performed as guest artists at music conventions for the College Music Society, the National Flute Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. The group’s fourth CD, “Into the Blue,” was released in 2006 by Albany Records.
