TTU's Homecoming '97 is Ready to Rock 'N Roll

The music is in the air, and it is getting louder as Tennessee Technological University's Homecoming 1997 approaches. This year all your old Rock 'N Roll favorites from the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's will be highlighted as the theme for the week-and-a-half long schedule of events from Wednesday, Oct. 22, to Saturday, Nov. 1. The Homecoming events will include a golf tournament for alumni and University supporters at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at White Plains Golf Course. For reservations, call 800-889-8730 or 372-3205.

The annual alumni award winners will be honored at a reception Friday, Oct. 31. The recipients this year are astronaut Roger Crouch, World Paralympic medalist Matt Bulow and retired Tennessee Tech librarian C. P. Snelgrove. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 4:30 p.m., and awards will be presented at 5:15 p.m. Crouch will conclude the reception by presenting to Tennessee Tech President Angelo Volpe the University's items that were carried aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia during his space flights in April and July. The annual Sports Hall of Fame Letterwinners' Breakfast begins at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center.

\The Homecoming parade begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. Floats and participating bands will focus on the Rock 'N Roll theme. Performing this year will be bands from Cookeville High School, Avery Trace Middle School, Upperman High School, Livingston Academy and Dekalb County High School.

An all-campus pizza party at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, between the University Center and Derryberry Hall will satisfy the hunger of eager Homecoming participants. Cost is $6 and includes four slices of pizza, a soft drink and a football game ticket. A Golden Grad Luncheon to honor the classes of '47 and earlier will be held at the same time in the Executive Dining Room of the University Center. Cost is $10 and includes a football game ticket. Other exciting events scheduled for Homecoming include: A banner contest, featuring Rock 'n Roll themed designs, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, with the banners displayed in the University Center. A hot dog cookout and canned food drive will begin at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, on the South Patio of the University Center. The cookout is free, and the canned food will be donated to five area charities for the needy. The Homecoming Kick-off will feature a Rock 'N Roll stage show by students at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, in the Derryberry Hall auditorium. Field Day events beginning at 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center will test students' skills in events like the joust, bungee run or a radar speed pitch. The plywood art contest at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, will rejuvenate competitive spirit and creativity with designs to welcome astronaut and Tennessee Tech distinguished alumnus Roger Crouch. The works will be displayed in front of the Information Desk on the first floor of the University Center. A scavenger hunt at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, pits students competing for finding interesting items around the Cookeville area. A free concert for all Tennessee Tech students will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Memorial Gym. Describing their own sound, headliner band The Ernies said, "We're not ska-core, reggae, jazz or funk. We're not rock or pop. It's a thing called jive." The Kings of the Killer Fish, with their folksy, Southern rock and groove sound, will open for The Ernies. A pep rally with a noise and cheer contest begins at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, in the Memorial Gym. The Homecoming parade festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, with the football game between Tennessee Tech and Murray State beginning at 2 p.m.
