Tennessee Tech University’s Undergraduate Affiliate Network will be recognized as the Outstanding National Chapter at an American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biologyconference in California on April 24.

This year, the chapter launched a new high school science outreach program, “DNA Fingerprinting: A Modern Tool for Genetics Testing, Forensic Science and Research.” They also started a new Undergraduate Research Interest Program featuring seminars and guest speakers.

They contributed to their community by holding a barbeque and blood drive, which resulted in 50 pints of blood collected for the local blood bank. The chapter also hosted laser tag and bowling to increase membership.

In scholarly activity, six members will present posters at the ASBMB annual meeting and the group frequently contributes content to the publication “Enzymatic.”

Jeff Boles is the faculty adviser. Casey McCormick, a junior biochemistry major, serves as chapter president.

“These students work very hard - not just in their class work, but in providing STEM educational opportunities, university and public service, as well as the education of their peers concerning the importance of undergraduate research. As their adviser, I could not be more proud,” said Boles.
