University Orchestra to perform works by Mendelssohn, Haydn
The Tennessee Tech University Orchestra, made up of student performers, offers a program of works by Mendelssohn and Haydn on Dec. 3 at 7:30 p.m.
The concert will be held at Derryberry Hall and is free.
On the program is Mendelssohn’s Overture “The Herbrides” and Haydn’s Symphony no. 82 “The Bear.” This is the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn, and orchestras worldwide are participating in celebrations of his work.
The University Orchestra is conducted by Dan Allcott, TTU associate professor and director of orchestras. The majority of performers in the orchestra are music majors studying performance and music education. The orchestra also boasts many string players with diverse areas of study such as history, geology, engineering and other majors.
The venue for this year’s concert was changed to Derryberry Hall from Wattenbarger Auditorium because the university is hosting the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) football championships Dec. 3-5. Parking on campus near Wattenbarger Auditorium will be severely limited during those days.
