MEHENDI DECORATIONS FOR DONORS TO THE VICTIMS
OF KATRINA
COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (09/15/05) – The Indian Association
of Cookeville is sponsoring efforts to send aid to the victims of Hurricane
Katrina by giving mehendi decorations to donors in front of the university
bookstore next Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Mehendi is a vegetable plant dye used for the art of decorating hands,
palms and other various body parts with a paste of henna. It usually
stays for three or four days before fading. It originated in India and
its popularity found its way to the United States.
The IAOC will be on hand to accept donations Tuesday, Sept. 20, from
10 a.m. to noon; Thursday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon; and Friday,
Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will be given to the American
Red Cross.
Members of the IAOC will apply the artwork and tell donors the proper
steps to care for and remove the dye. The size of the decoration will
be proportional to the amount of the donation.

City opens donation center
The City of Cookeville has opened a donation center
to accept items for hurricane victims who are in Cookeville. Clothing
(nice, laundered or new), personal hygiene items, household items, bedding,
furniture and non-perishable food items will be accepted. Volunteers
will be needed to sort, inventory and stock donations. The Center will
be located at 1497 Gould Drive. The use of this facility is being donated
by Johnny and Jack Stites of J & S Construction Company. J.R. Nash
Moving and Storage and Freddy Duncan Moving and Storage have also provided
support, collection and deliveries.
The city hopes to make it a one stop center where
people can get supplies,
clothing, information about health care, schools, counseling, employment
opportunities and information about short-and long-term housing. Volunteers
are needed to staff this center, so if you or your group are interested
in
helping with this effort, call the City of Cookeville at 526-9591.
Once the needs of those in our community are served,
remaining items will be
sent to the areas affected by the disaster.
Gov. Bredesen offers enrollment to students displaced
by hurricane
Gov. Phil Bredesen announced that effective immediately
any student admitted to an accredited college or university affected
by Hurricane Katrina can enroll in a Tennessee college or university.
The objective is to assist students to continue their education at a
Tennessee college or university until they can return to their home
campuses. Details about payment of any fees will be announced at a later
date, but students should contact the Admissions Office at the University
of Memphis (1-800-669-2678 or 1-901-678-2111). That office will answer
questions and serve as a central point for referring inquiries to other
colleges and universities in Tennessee.
