COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (June 10, 2002) If a picture is worth a thousand
words, as the saying goes, then the new Tennessee Tech University photo
history book is beyond economical.
Combining concise historical information and more than 200 photos of
TTU some of which are dated as early as 1911 and many of which
are quite rare the book's cover price is less than $20.
Compiled by archivist Mancil Johnson and history professor Calvin Dickinson,
the volume is the latest installment in Arcadia Publishing's College History
Series. Based in Charleston, S.C., Arcadia specializes in publishing books
with regional and local interest.
"I found out about Arcadia Publishing and the College History Series
last year at the Tennessee Archivists Conference, and I thought it would
be a worthwhile project for Tennessee Tech," Johnson said. "It
really does preserve the past for the future."
Many of the pictures included in the TTU photo history came from the
Photo Services or Harding Studio collections, both of which are housed
in the University Archives.
"Tennessee Technological University is sure to enchant students,
alumni and friends of the university alike. Mancil Johnson and Calvin
Dickinson have combined their expertise and resources to create a precious
volume that can be passed down from generation to generation," said
Sara San Angelo, publicity manager at Arcadia Publishing.
"Readers will delight in images of the changing student body, academic
clubs of yesteryear and buildings which no longer stand," she continued.
Other institutions included in Arcadia's College History Series range
from Middle Tennessee State University and Fisk University in Tennessee
to Texas A & M and Boston College.
The TTU book is available at the university bookstore and several other
Cookeville locations, and the entire series is available on-line at www.arcadiapublishing.com
or by calling toll free 1-888-313-2665.
