COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 24, 2003) Tennessee Tech Universitys
Brass Arts Quintet is gearing up for a performance of titanic proportions.
The faculty ensemble will present a multimedia concert featuring music
from the fateful 1912 maiden voyage of the legendary ocean liner Titanic
at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the
Bryan Fine Arts Building.
Free and open to the public, the program will follow the history of
the ocean liner from its construction to its sinking and will be narrated
by Rick Woods, director of Cookevilles Leisure Services Department
and well-known local musician and performer.
"This program should appeal to history buffs of the Titanic the
worlds largest and most luxurious ocean liner of its day and
music lovers who enjoy a wide variety of styles, from contemporary film
music to turn-of-the-century ragtime and early jazz," said Charles
Decker, quintet coordinator.
"This historic event has captured the imaginations of millions
for almost a century, and we are excited to present (this program)," he
continued.
The concert will begin with original music composed by James Horner
for the 1998 film, "Titanic: Ship of Dreams."
It will continue with music actually performed on the ship, ranging
from Puccinis "La Boheme" to Irving Berlins "Alexanders
Ragtime Band" and will include early jazz and other popular music
of the day.
Simultaneous with the music, a multimedia program will present photographs
of the ship and many of its passengers to help enhance the audiences
experience of returning in time to April 1912, Decker said.
Members of the Brass Arts Quintet are TTU brass faculty Decker and Chris
McCormick, trumpets; Greg Danner, horn; Joshua Hauser, trombone; and
R. Winston Morris, tuba.
Copies of the quintets newest recording, "Shazam!" from
Mark Records of Buffalo, N.Y., will be available for purchase at the
concert.
