TTU student one of three national recipients of Dam Safety Scholarship

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (May 1, 2003) -- Karen Annette Jackson of Tennessee Tech University was among three students chosen nationally to receive an Association of State Dam Safety Officials Scholarship for 2003-2004. This is the first year ASDSO has awarded three scholarships; it is also the first year in which only senior undergraduates have been eligible, and that all winners have been women.

All three of this year’s recipients are civil engineering majors. They were chosen from well-qualified applicants representing universities across the United States. Each will receive $1,600 for educational expenses incurred in the 2003-2004 school year.
Jackson is a member of the TTU student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon Civil Engineering Honor Society, the Society of Women Engineers, and the Ecology and Publicity Committees of the Honors Program. She is interested in dam design and maintenance, and has worked as a summer engineering intern at Robert G. Campbell and Associates in Knoxville.

The other two recipients hail from North Carolina A&T State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The ASDSO Scholarship Program was established in 1992 to award excellence in the study of civil engineering and related fields, and to make students more aware of dam safety as a career opportunity. Each year, ASDSO awards up to $5,000 to outstanding students who plan a career related to the design, construction and operation of dams.

Tennessee Tech University is well known for its world-class engineering programs. The university was also ranked among the South's Top Public Schools for the second year in a row by U.S. News & World Report's 2003 America's Best Colleges publication.
