COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 26, 2004) -- Quality performance and sound business
practices have earned Tennessee Tech Universitys School of Interdisciplinary
Studies and Extended Education a 2003 Commitment Award from the Tennessee
Center for Performance Excellence.
The award recognizes the schools excellence as an outreach and
service unit of the university that partners with academic units and external
groups to provide credit and non-credit courses, campus evening and weekend
courses, distance learning offerings, special courses and events, service
activities and interdisciplinary degrees.
I am proud that a school whose mission is always evolving to meet
the diverse needs of its audiences has been recognized for the excellence
shown in fulfilling its goals, said TTU President Bob Bell.
The Commitment Level is awarded to organizations that implement quality
management principles and both document and implement solid plans and
procedures. The board of examiners comprises more than 150 experts in
business, education, healthcare and government who assess applicants on
seven criteria.
Bell and the schools dean, Susan Elkins, accepted the award at
a recent banquet in Nashville. Awards were given out in three of four
categories bestowed by the TNCPE: Quality Interest, Commitment and Achievement.
TNCPE president Marie B. Williams assisted with the presentations.
Excellence implies more than competence it implies a striving
for the highest possible standards, said Williams. The award
winners represent the best and have done a great service by setting high
standards for others to follow.
The Tennessee Performance Excellence Awards are open to all businesses
as well as public and private education institutions, health care organizations,
government agencies and other non-profit groups. Tennessee Center for
Performance Excellence, formerly known as the Tennessee Quality Award,
was established in 1993 to promote the understanding and use of the Criteria
for Performance Excellence.
