COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 10, 2004) — Think of Celtic music and Spain probably isn’t the first country that comes to mind — but listening to the traditional Spanish Celtic music of Llan de Cubel could change that.

The six-member ensemble whose performance is based on the traditional music of Asturies, the Celtic region of northern Spain, will be in concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22, in the Multipurpose Room of Tennessee Tech University’s Roaden University Center.

Steve Winick of Dirty Linen Magazine describes their sound as “delicately-balanced, but they manage it beautifully — upbeat, bright and bouncy.”

The group gets its distinctive sound from acoustic instruments indigenous to the region, such as fiddle, flute, accordion and especially the Asturian bagpipes.

Llan de Cubel’s primarily instrumental repertoire is punctuated by an occasional song, which includes some traditional lyrics but is made up mostly of contemporary texts set to music with traditional Asturian melodies.

Its members are Simon Bradley, on fiddle; Xel Pereda, on acoustic guitar and vocals; Elias Garcia, on bouzouki and bass pedal; Marcos Llope, on flute and main vocals; Fonsu Mielgo, on percussion, keyboards and vocals; and Xuan Rodriguez, on Asturian bagpipes.

A Center Stage event, the show is free and open to the public.
