COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 31, 2005) – Image is defined by substance. This is the philosophy behind the work of Jessica Smith, whose exhibit, “Domestic Element: Fabric, Paper and Weaving,” will be on display in Gallery Two of Tennessee Tech University’s Appalachian Center for Craft through Sept. 18.

Smith received her bachelor’s degree in painting from the University of Washington and her master’s in textile design from the University of Kansas.

Combining her two specialties, Smith creates fabrics, wall coverings and weavings that define our lives, status and aspirations. She sees her work as a dialogue between interior design and installation art.

“The colors and patterns are reminiscent of tradition interiors, but they also represent present-day aspirations. I utilize ornamentation to illustrate a contemporary obsession with grandeur and the desire to decorate in a manner that enhances our self image,” says Smith.

To get to the Appalachian Center for Craft, a satellite campus of TTU, take Interstate 40 to Exit 273, then take Highway 56 approximately six miles toward Smithville and turn left immediately after crossing Hurricane Bridge.
