COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Aug. 30, 2005) – Tennessee Tech University flute
professor Roger Martin will present a faculty recital at the university’s
Wattenbarger Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
The recital will demonstrate the various sounds of the flute combined
with other instruments. Paul Thurmond will accompany Martin on organ and
piano, Paul Deatherage will accompany on drums and Mark Smith on bass.
The scheduled program will be divided in halves, featuring short works
for flute and organ and the jazz “Suite” by Claude Bolling,
respectively.
For the flute and organ portion of the presentation, “Be Still
My Soul” is a short fantasy adapted from the hymn tune “Finlandia”
by Rhonda Larson, who previously appeared at Center Stage last January.
“Air” by Charles DeLaney of Florida State University is a
composition with a neo-Romantic flair. “Rhapsody” by John
Weaver shows the power of the flute from different ranges in both virtuosity
and strength of sound.
The “Suite” for flute and jazz piano by Bolling will feature
all said performers in a six-movement combo piece.
“This is the piece that put French jazz pianist and composer Bolling
on the map back in the 1970s in his recording with renowned flutist Jean-Pierre
Rampal,” Martin said.
Wattenbarger Auditorium is located in the Bryan Fine Arts Building. The
event is free and open to the general public.
