COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2005) — The Brass Arts Quintet will
be in concert at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23, in the Wattenbarger Auditorium
of Tennessee Tech University’s Bryan Fine Arts Building.
The program, which is free and open to the public, will feature music
composed for brass from Russia, England, and the United States, and will
include two works arranged specifically for the ensemble.
Among the featured works of the program are Victor Ewald’s “Quintet
for Brass,” which is a classic piece for quintet that was composed
in the late romantic style, and Joseph Horowitz’s “Music Hall
Suite,” a humorous piece that sets variety show acts to music.
TTU’s newly appointed saxophone professor Phil Barham will join
the brass faculty for the show. Barham has appeared throughout the United
States as a soloist and recitalist, and at the Feb. 23 show, he will perform
Holcombe’s “Blues Concerto,” originally composed for
the U.S. Navy Band of Washington, D.C.
“This program will feature a huge range of works – from pieces
composed at the English courts of the Renaissance to contemporary jazz,”
said Charles Decker, quintet coordinator. “It’s particularly
exciting for us to have phenomenal saxophone soloist Phil Barham joining
us.”
Members of the Brass Arts Quintet are TTU brass faculty Charles Decker
and Chris McCormick, trumpets; Greg Danner, horn; Joshua Hauser, trombone;
and R. Winston Morris, tuba.
The quintet recently released its latest compact disc recording, “Shazam!,”
and has appeared on concert specials broadcast nationally on public television
stations.
