COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Feb. 16, 2005) – In observance of March as Women’s
History Month, renowned Princeton historian Nell Irvin Painter will present
a guest lecture about race and women at Tennessee Tech University’s
Derryberry Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1.
Her discussion will focus on topics from her book, “Southern History
Across the Color Line and Its Impact on Women,” and a question and
answer session, book signing and reception will follow the lecture.
The book devotes six essays to the topics that shaped black and white
women’s lives in the South through the past two centuries. Themes
such as interracial sex, white supremacy and the physical and psychological
violence of slavery are explored.
Painter is currently the Edwards Professor of History at Princeton University
and served as the university’s director of African-American studies
from 1997 to 2000.
A Center Stage event co-sponsored by the Women’s Center at TTU
as part of Women’s History Month, the lecture is free and open to
the public.
