COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Feb.16, 2005) – A faculty saxophone recital
by Phil Barham will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 28, in the Wattenbarger
Auditorium of Tennessee Tech University’s Bryan Fine Arts Building.
Among the pieces featured in the concert include “Libertango,”
a tango piece written in 1974 by Astor Piazzolla and “Brilliance,”
a four-movement work by Ida Gotkovsky that explores the sonic capabilities
and technical extremes of the saxophone.
Two selections from the song cycle “Terror and Magnificence”
by John Harle will follow. Diane Pulte will join Barham to sing mezzo-soprano
for the two selections.
A world premiere of Shih-Hui Chen’s “Plum Blossoms”
will also be on the program. This is one piece in a series of world-premiere
performances, commissioned by World-Wide Concurrent Premieres and Commissioning
Fund, Inc.
“Wendy” by Paul Desmond and “Verano Porteno,”
an up-tempo tribute from Piazzolla to the people of Buenos Aires, will
conclude the program.
Barham will perform on both alto and soprano saxophones for the recital,
and Paul Thurmond and Frederick Kennedy will accompany on the piano. The
event is free and open to the public.
