COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 22, 2005) — The Emerging juried exhibition featuring work by Tennessee Tech University’s fine arts majors runs through April 3 at the North Windows Gallery of the Appalachian Center for Craft.

The competitive exhibition juried by Nashville artist and Vanderbilt University professor Marilyn Murphy is an exciting way to see fine craft and painting by some of TTU’s up-and-coming young artists.

“It was inspiring in the breadth and diversity of media and in the development of the artists’ ideas. I am very impressed with the passion and deliberation involved in the works,” Murphy said.

At the opening reception on March 14th, awards with accompanying cash prizes were given in three categories: Best of Show ($500), Merit Awards ($200) and Juror’s Recognition ($50).

Rush Skinnell, BFA metals major, won Best of Show for his metalwork. “The meticulous craftsmanship of his pin and necklace coupled with the angular, almost dangerous-looking design – but still comfortably wearable – created compelling objects of desire,” Murphy said.

Merit Award winners included Anderson Bailey (clay), Sean O’Neill (glass), Kelly Seaman (painting), Derreld Hallenbeck (wood) and Rachel Aleksander (fibers). Juror’s Recognition awards were presented to Jason Sacran (painting), Jessie Goodman (glass) Anna Quarles (metals) and Breanna Kincaid (fibers).

“This exhibition has been a wonderful experience for the art majors at the Craft Center and TTU,” said Kathie McGlamery, assistant director at the Craft Center. “It is a perfect opportunity to see the extremely high quality of work being produced by our incredibly talented students – we are so fortunate to have the support and venue to showcase their creations.”

The Craft Center is located approximately six miles from Interstate 40 at Exit 273. To get to there, turn south on Highway 56 toward Smithville and turn left immediately after crossing Hurricane Bridge.
