COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2005) – “Technology, Strategy and U.S. Defense Policy” will be the topic of Tennessee Tech University’s Stonecipher Lecture on Science and Society at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 10, in Derryberry Hall Auditorium.

The guest speaker at the lecture will be Williamson Murray, senior fellow at the Institute of Defense Analysis.

Murray graduated with honors in history from Yale University in 1963, served five years as a U.S. Air Force officer and returned to Yale to pursue his doctorate in military-diplomatic history.

He taught for two years at Yale before becoming a military and diplomatic historian in 1977 at Ohio State University, where he retired in 1995.

Murray is a prolific writer and editor, and his most recent book, written with Maj. Gen. Robert Scales Jr., is titled “The Iraq War, A Military History.”

In addition to working as a defense consultant in Washington, D.C., Murray is currently working on a book about the ability of military institutions to adapt to the challenging conditions of combat.

He will be a visiting professor of naval heritage and history at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in January 2006.

Murray has also taught at a number of other institutions, including the Air War College, U.S. Military Academy, Naval War College, Marine Corps University, London School of Economics and Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum.
