Q. What is Campus Recreation?

Campus Recreation, a division of the Student Affairs Department, is home to the Fitness Center facility, Health Promotions Programs, Intramural Sports, Outdoor Program, Varsity Cheerleaders and Dancers, and summer Cheerleading and Dance Camps.

Q. What is the Fitness Center?

The Fitness Center is the physical home of Campus Recreation. It is an 80,000 square foot facility that opened in 1991. The facility was built and is maintained by using a portion of student access fees and revenue generated from products, services and programs for students, faculty/staff and graduates of Tennessee Tech University.

Q. Where is the Fitness Center?

The Fitness Center is located next to the Hooper Eblen Center on the corner of 12th Street and Willow Ave.

Q. Who can use the Fitness Center?

Currently enrolled Tennessee Tech University students, current and retired employees, graduates, and the *dependents of these groups.

*Dependents are defined as a spouse and any children under the age of 22.

Q. How does one qualify to use the Fitness Center?

Students with 6 or more hours have paid an access fee, so they can use the facility by scanning the Eagle Card ID, without further purchase. Students with 5 or fewer hours may purchase a part-time student membership. The part-time student membership will last the entire semester. Both full and part-time students may purchase a dependent membership for their spouse and children. It is important that you carry your student ID with you at all times. This will allow you to enter the facility.

Dependent Membership Fee: $60 per person

Q. Can my parents or siblings get memberships to the Fitness Center?

Only the spouse and children of the primary member may have a membership. However, a member can bring siblings, parents, or friends as a guest for a $5 guest fee. There is a five-person guest limit per member per day.

Q. Can I use the facility during the summer if I am not taking classes?

Students who attended in the spring semester of the current year can purchase a summer membership for $50. This membership will take you through the first day of fall classes.

Q. What if I have skipped a semester?

Students who have skipped a semester can purchase a membership if they are going to attend the following semester and are in good academic standing. The cost for the membership is $72.

Q. What if I don't want to purchase a membership?

Persons wanting to use the Fitness Center must purchase a membership or, be issued an Eligible Non-Member card. Each time you enter the facility, show this card and pay $5.

Q. Where is the Intramural Sports office located?

The Intramural Sports office is located in room 220 on the second floor of the Fitness Center. The office hours are 10 a.m. - noon and 1 - 3 p.m., Monday-Friday and the office can be reached by calling 372-3907 or by visiting the Intramurals page. This program offers basketball, football, softball, video football competitions, ultimate frisbee, golf tournaments, wrestling, and arena football. All full-time and part-time students are invited to sign up for their sport of choice.

Q. Where can I find the hours for the Fitness Center?

The hours are available on this web site, and throughout the building during holidays and breaks. Fall and Spring semester operating hours are Monday - Thursday 6:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m., Friday: 6:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m., Saturday: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., Sunday: 1:00 - 10 p.m. Operating hours for summer semester, holidays and severe weather vary, check the Fitness Center's homepage during these times.

Q. Is there childcare available for students and members?

Childcare is available for children, age 5 - 12, on Monday - Thursday, 5 p.m. - 7 p.m. When you enter the building, ask where childcare is located for that evening. Typical places are the T.V. Lounge area, concessions area, a racquetball court, or the Multipurpose room.

Q. I want to use the Fitness Center, but I'm not sure what to do!

Free building tours are always available through the main office. For an Equipment Orientation, a free one-time introduction to cardiovascular and/or resistance equipment, as well as information on how you can set-up your own personal fitness regimen, you can call 372-6511.

Q. What is the Annual Spring Health Fair?

The Annual Spring Health Fair is held the 2nd Tuesday of April. It consists of medical vendors including hearing screening, podiatry, chiropractors, blood and vascular screening, plus financial advisors and alternative medicines. The blood and vascular screenings require an appointment and has a fee. Information for this annual fair is normally available by mid-February. The Health Fair is advertised on the web site, and via Campus Mail to all faculty and staff.

In addition to the Health Fair, Campus Rec sponsors a Fall Health Check in the Fall for those who wish to do follow up blood work. This event consists of blood and vascular screening. Information concerning the specific date will be posted on the web page. The advertising mode is the same as the Health Fair.

Q. Does the Fitness Center ever close for bad weather?

The Fitness Center remains open as much as possible during inclement weather but will close (sometimes with little or no notice) when the safety of employees and members could be jeopardized. If the weather is bad, please call 372-6215 before coming out.

Q. How is the radio station chosen?

This station was chosen because it appeals to a diverse population. The station cannot be changed unless approved by the director.

Q. Who can use the Fitness Studio?

The Fitness Studio is reserved for Campus Rec sponsored classes. If you belong to an organization, club or team and would like a class for your group, please call Director David Mullianx, (372-6209).

Q. How many laps around the track to a make a mile?

The track is 1/6 of a mile, so 6 laps make a mile.

Q. What do I do if my card will not scan?

For students, there are 3 possible reasons your card may not scan:

  1. Our scanning machine has malfunctioned
  2. Your Eagle Card has become damaged
  3. You are not enrolled in classes this semester so your Eagle Card is not activated.

If the reason for your card not scanning is our scanner is malfunctioning, we have the ability to fix our scanner or verify your enrollment. If you are faculty or staff and your card won't scan, the office can verify your membership status.  If it is after office hours, ask to see a supervisor. If your Eagle Card has become damaged, you will need to go to the Eagle Card office and have it fixed. The Eagle Card office is located in the Roaden University Center, Room 230.
