| Information Technology Services
Information Technology Services grew out of the central computer facility located in Clement Hall. The D.W. Mattson Computer Center was named in honor of Professor Dale W. Mattson, who brought the first digital computer, an IBM 650, to the University in the 1960s. The Center houses several computer systems manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). These systems include a VAX 7620, an AlphaServer 4100 5/466 and two AXP 3000-M600s. The Center also has terminals, workstations, and microcomputers.
A campus-wide Ethernet local area network (LAN), which uses fiber optic media, makes computing services available across campus. Wide-area networking is also available, allowing users access to the Internet and TECnet.
Computer Labs are located across the campus. A full listing may be found at:
Information Technology Services personnel are divided into four groups: operations, administrative systems, systems support, and academic support. The academic support section provides short courses and consulting services to students, faculty members, and administrators. Statistical advisory service is also provided.
The Information Technology Committee, an advisory group composed of students, faculty members, and administrators, makes recommendations on information technology policies to ensure computer facilities are shared on an equitable basis by all users of the computer systems on Tech's campus. Information Technology Services also processes public service projects at competitive charge rates, provided that the work does not interfere with educational uses of the computer system.
