Research at Tennessee Technological University is enhanced by three Centers of Excellence:
- Center for Energy Systems Research
- Center for Manufacturing Research
- Center for the Management, Utilization and Protection of Water Resources
The Centers, administered through the College of Engineering, bring together cooperating interdisciplinary research teams of faculty and students from departments, schools and research units throughout the campus.
These Centers of advanced scholarship within state-supported universities were founded and received special funding through the State of Tennessee Centers of Excellence program. Each Center strives to use present education resources to achieve excellence; to support economic development in the state; to enhance the intellectual, cultural and social climate for Tennessee citizens; to use external sources to improve research; and to attract nationally and internationally recognized faculty to Tennessee institutions.
The Water Resources Center received the 1987 "Performance Par Excellence" award and was recognized as an "Accomplished Center" in August 1988 by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. In August 1989, the Center for Electric Power and the Manufacturing Center were also designated "Accomplished Centers."
