Student Research Day at Tennessee Technological University

Theme: Research Across the Disciplines

Research may be defined as intensive systematic investigation into a subject in an effort to discover new facts or apply current knowledge/techniques to better understand a system.

The “Student Research Day” at Tennessee Technological University is an effort to: highlight and emphasize the importance and significance of research in postsecondary education; and, to recognize the different areas of research peculiar to the different disciplines; hence, the theme “Research Across the Disciplines.”

  • The Research Day Poster Session(s) will be held in the Multipurpose Room in the Roaden University Center on Thursday, April 5, 2007
  • There will be a graduate division and an undergraduate division.
  • All participants will receive a “Certificate of Participation.”
  • Posters will be judged and awards will be presented for the best posters.

Poster Requirements

  • Poster presentations should be arranged in the order of the progression of the work described; arrange in a flow pattern that reflects the framework of the research being presented.
  • Effective poster presentations typically include: (a) introduction; (b) description of the method or technique used; (c) results obtained; (d) discussion of results; (e) conclusion/recommendation(s); (f) references.
  • Trifold presentation board 36” x 48” for Table Tops will be provided by the participant. The trifold presentation boards are available in the University Store.
  • Tables for the Poster Boards will be provided by the sponsors.
  • The poster text should be clearly readable. The font size should be of such that the text is readable from a distance of three to four feet.
  • The title of the poster should be stated clearly, followed by the authors’ names, the department name(s), followed by the name of the Faculty Advisor (undergraduate) or Research Mentor (graduate).
  • The figures (diagrams, etc) should each have a descriptive title and a figure number. Also, there should be figure captions that help viewers understand and/or interpret your discussion.

Thursday April 5, 2007

  • 7:00 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. Poster Set-up
  • 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. Judging
    Students at posters (if possible)
  • 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. Open Poster Review and Discussion
    Students at posters (if possible)
  • 11:15 a.m. – noon Awards Ceremony
  • Noon- 2:00 p.m. Open Poster Review and Discussion
    Students at posters (if possible)
  • 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m Poster pick-up

Refreshments will be served throughout the day.

Questions and Answers

When do I need to set up my poster?
You may set your poster display up starting at 7:00pm until 9:00pm on Wednesday, April 4. If you’re unable to set your poster up on Wednesday evening, poster set-up will resume from 7:00am-7:45 on Thursday, April 5. Your poster must be set and ready for display NO LATER THAN 7:45am, Thursday.

Where do I set up my poster?
Your poster must be displayed on tri-fold poster board available from the University bookstore. Tables will be set up in the Multipurpose Room for poster setup starting on the evening (7:00pm) of April 4. The tables that are set up in the Multipurpose Room will have signs on them to indicate where your poster will be in the room. Also, Office of Research staff will be available to assist in directing where your poster should be set up.

Participants shall present themselves in a professional manner (this includes respectable attire)

What else can I expect from the day’s activities?
A printed program containing the research abstracts will be available. Starting at 8:00am and continuing to approximately 9:30 am on Thursday, faculty from various colleges on campus will judge the posters. You’re expected to present during this time, if possible, to answer any questions the judges may have and to explain your research. Then, from 10-11:15, there will be an open poster review and discussion followed by the awards ceremony from 11:15 until noon. An additional open poster review and discussion will run from noon until 2:00. Poster pick-up and breakdown will get underway starting at 2:00pm and wrapping up by 3:00pm.
