Remarks by President Bell:

Opening Comments: President Bell informed the committee that the Cookeville Fire Department is not automatically notified in the event of a fire alarm. Although evacuation of the building is the main priority, someone should still call 911 to "get the ball rolling" with emergency procedures. Some buildings on campus have automatic 911 calling, but not all are equipped with the service.

The President also commented about the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams. He congratulated the teams as well as the coaching staff on this season’s success.

Retirements: Ms. Mary Ann Cummins, Student Affairs, and Mr. Ron Rami, Director of Student Activities, retired on February 28.

FYI: President Bell briefed the committee on meetings with the state legislature. The Senate and House Education Committees are reviewing overall funding in the University system and its peer review system that relates Tennessee Tech with other universities. Efforts are also underway to move the need for a new nursing building up on the State Building Commission’s priority list. A Governor’s School for TTU in Information Technology will probably get funded this year because of the low cost to the state.

Review of Questions/Comments: President Bell addressed various concerns that were brought up at the Staff Advisory Open Meeting in December. Communication across campus, employee evaluation forms, staff policies, and salary issues were discussed.

Other Such Matters:

1) The Child Development Lab’s future is being reviewed. President Bell stated that the CDL is an academic unit designed to study child behavior in a controlled setting, but is not meant to be a day care center. A topic of debate is whether the controlled setting is an appropriate method for studying childcare behavior. Dean Garber is scheduled to meet with the parents.

2) Debbie Peek had a question regarding the 13.2 hours monthly leave time that TTU employees earn after 10 years of employment and 15 hours after 20 years. She asked, "Is this TBR policy to wait another 10 years to reach the 15 hour level?" Response – President Bell stated that Human Resources could research whether the policy is local, TBR, or state.

The meeting was adjourned.
