What types of scholarships are available to new students?
The University Academic Service Scholarship is the most prominent university scholarship and is based upon ACT (or SAT) scores and high school GPA. Other university scholarships include music performance, debate, speech, alumni, diversity, and departmental scholarships. Most departmental scholarships are donor-funded and have specific individual criteria. These may include demonstration of financial need, county-specific criteria, and major-specific criteria. All available scholarships offered by Tennessee Tech are accessible by searching ScholarWeb.


What is the deadline to apply for scholarships?
You must apply by December 15th prior to the Fall term for which you will attend. (Example: You must apply by December 15, 2013 if you wish to begin classes Fall 2014.)  Letters of recommendation must be completed by the recommender online via ScholarWeb by January 15, 2014. 


What is the deadline to apply for scholarships if I plan for a spring or summer enrollment?
You would still need to apply by December 15th prior to the fall term. (Example: You must apply by December 15, 2013 if you wish to begin classes Spring 2015). 


When will the scholarship application be available?
The scholarship application will be available annually from August 15-December 15.


Do I need to apply for each scholarship individually?
No. Just completing one scholarship application per academic year is all that is needed. This will make you eligible for all TTU scholarships for which you meet the criteria.


How do I apply for Music Performance Scholarships?
The Music Department requires students to complete the Music Scholarship application process in addition to submitting the TTU Scholarship Application via ScholarWeb.  All forms required by the Music Department should be submitted directly to the Music Department, PO Box 5045, Cookeville, TN, 38505.  For more information on applying for Music Performance Scholarships, visit the Music Department's website


How do I apply for athletics scholarships?
For information on scholarships in Athletics, you need to contact the Athletics Department at 1-800-825-3948 and ask to speak to a coach in the sports program you are interested in joining.


How do I apply for ROTC scholarships?

Do I have to submit letters of recommendation or an essay in order to apply for scholarships?
All scholarships require a goals statement essay and some scholarships require letters of recommendation.  To see which departments and scholarships require letters of recommendation and essays, visit the Recommendation Letters & Essays section.  All letters and essays must be submitted online via ScholarWeb.


What types of information do departments consider when awarding scholarships?
Most departments strongly consider GPA, especially in the subject of your major. They may also consider ACT score, extracurricular activities, honor/recognitions, financial need, and experience related to your field of interest.


Which ACT (SAT) test dates will be accepted?
ACT (SAT) tests taken through December will be accepted. Tests after December will NOT be considered for scholarship selection. If you retake the ACT (SAT) after December and increase your score, this will not change your scholarship qualification. Be sure to list Tennessee Tech as a recipient school for your test score so we will receive the scores in time for scholarship review.


How important is the high school transcript in scholarship selection?
Very important! You will not be considered for any university or departmental scholarships if we don't have your transcript. We use the transcript on file in the Office of Admissions as of January 15.  It is best to request your transcript as early in the fall as possible to ensure it reaches us in time to be reviewed for scholarships. We have an absolute deadline of January 15 for the receipt of transcripts for scholarship purposes, but the earlier you can send it, the better.


I want to be considered for scholarships that require financial need.  Is there an additional form I should fill out?
Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) as soon as possible after January 1.  The priority deadline for need-based scholarships through ScholarWeb is March 1.  Apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.  The FAFSA is also the official federal document for determining financial need and eligibility for all forms of financial aid in addition to scholarships.  If you are eligible for the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship, you must complete the FAFSA.  For more information about the FAFSA, visit the Financial Aid website


How will I know if I have received a scholarship?
If you are selected to receive a scholarship, you will be notified by the department making the award. Most notifications are sent by e-mail, so be sure to check the email address you used to create your ScholarWeb account regularly. University scholarship offers will be made by March 15.  You can also log in to your ScholarWeb account at any time to see what scholarships have been offered to you. 


If I didn’t receive notification, does that mean I didn’t receive anything?
Yes.  You can also log in to your ScholarWeb account at any time to see your scholarship status. 


What is a Tennessee Board of Regents (TBR) Community College Scholarship?
This is the equivalent of the University Academic Service Scholarship offered at participating Tennessee community colleges. They generally involve a service component and are based on academic performance. Students receiving these may apply for a Community College Transfer Scholarship offered through the Scholarship Office.  Students must apply for scholarships by December 15 to be considered for the Community College Transfer Scholarship.


Will I lose a scholarship if I switch majors?
In most instances, yes. If you are receiving a departmental scholarship, it generally requires you to major in that department.


Are letters of recommendation a requirement?
Some specific majors and scholarships do require letters of recommendation.  Review the Recommendation Letters and Essays section to see if your department requires letters of recommendation.  If you wish to submit letters of recommendation, they must be completed by the recommender online via ScholarWeb.  You can log in to your ScholarWeb Scholarship Application and list the email address of any recommender who you wish to write a letter for you.  You can also see which letters of recommendation have been completed for you within ScholarWeb. 


If I missed the scholarship application deadline, what other scholarship/financial aid options do I have?
It is always recommended that you complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). It is also recommended that you check with civic and professional organizations, parents’/students’ employers, and national scholarship searches for scholarship opportunities. You can apply for scholarships each year.
