Details about campus cleanup Monday, Aug. 12

The campus cleanup and beautification will take place Monday, Aug. 12, from 9–11 a.m.

Those who had volunteered for Friday may not be available Monday. Others who could not take part on Friday might find Monday is a better option for them. Everyone who can is encouraged to participate.

Volunteers can pick up T-shirts, gloves and other supplies beginning at 8:45 a.m. Monday on the main quad or in front of the Hoop, near the ticket office entrance.

The picnic for volunteers, beginning at 11 a.m., will be in the Multipurpose Room of the Roaden University Center, not on the main quad as originally planned. All volunteers should register to win a Purple Pride gift basket at the lunch. A winner will be drawn around noon at the lunch. You must be present to win.

Throughout the morning, Facilities staff will be assisting at each building and distributing trash bags and basic tools. The Facilities assistants will be wearing Tennessee Tech football jerseys and will be at the main entrance of each building. Please see them if you have questions about what needs to be done or need tools or assistance, and return any borrowed tools to them when you finish in your area.

Facilities assistants will provide white bags for trash and black bags for compostable debris, such as leaves, twigs and weeds. Volunteers should put the filled bags at the main entrance of their building when finished, and Facilities staff will remove all the bags.

The Facilities staff has worked on the grounds diligently this week, so volunteers may find that the projects around their buildings will not take long to complete. If so, they may help with other areas or go to the Multipurpose Room in the RUC early and relax with the other volunteers before the lunch. Lunch will be served at 11 a.m.

Buildings that may need additional volunteers include Brown Hall, Bruner Hall, Bryan Fine Arts Building, Fitness Center, Foundation Hall, Jere Whitson Building, Volpe Library, Memorial Gym, Pennebaker Hall and the Oakley STEM Center.

Employees are encouraged to bring their own small gardening hand tools, such as trowels, garden rakes, leaf rakes and shovels. Please label your personal tools. Larger tools or gas powered or mechanical tools are not needed. Facilities will provide and operate any tools of that nature that are necessary.

Facilities personnel will be working alongside volunteers across campus, assisting with leaf raking, debris removal, edging and other tasks. Kevin Tucker, who recently joined TTU as director of horticulture and grounds, will help oversee the day’s activities as he begins his work in that role. Mulch stations will be located at different points on campus, and Facilities staff will help load and unload the mulch.

The check-in stations at the Hoop and on the main quad will offer water and water bottles throughout the morning.
