Termination of Industrial Engineering Degree Planned

Feb. 16, 2010 - As economic conditions force universities across the nation to make drastic funding reductions, Tennessee Tech University is preparing to make some of the deepest budget cuts to date. After two decades of budget reductions, the university and the College of Engineering currently face two years of the most severe cuts in their histories . The severe cuts require the university and its academic units to plan strategically in order to keep key programs and operations viable.
In the two most recent fiscal years, the state appropriation to the College of Engineering has been reduced by approximately $1 million. To help meet reductions to the permanent budget, TTU’s College of Engineering is planning to terminate its Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) program. Admission of new students into the ISE major has been suspended. The ISE program will cease regular ISE course offerings effective June 30, 2012, by which time current ISE students should have completed degree requirements.
The ISE program is the smallest of TTU’s engineering programs, with 53 students enrolled as of fall 2009. The university and the college have developed a plan to assist the students and faculty during the transition.
The College of Engineering will monitor student progress to ensure degree completion in a timely manner for current students. ISE Chair David Elizandro will coordinate advising and degree completion activities for affected students. Elizandro will lead efforts to provide students with a quality experience throughout the remainder of their academic career, including opportunities for professional experiences such as cooperative education.
Removal of this program will not affect the reputation of degrees granted or the graduate’s relationship to TTU. Alumni continue to carry the reputation of TTU engineering with their degrees. As with most engineering programs, the ISE program at TTU is accredited by ABET. Program closure must be coordinated with ABET, further ensuring the quality of the program during transition.
