SACS Program and Learning Outcomes

Mission:
The General Curriculum program is recommended for freshmen students who are not quite ready to declare a major. The goal of the program is to help students make an educated decision on their major or career choice by assisting them in career exploration, providing academic support, and guidance. It is designed to encompass one academic year, but a student may be transferred at the end of any semester upon the request of the student and consent of his or her advisor. After General Curriculum students earn 60 semester hours, they must declare a major.

Program Outcomes:

  1. Students will utilize available resources to make a decision on what career he/she will pursue before completing 60 hours.
    • Assessment method: Success will be monitored by student response.
  2. The office will provide career and academic counseling to GECU students.
    • Assessment method: Success will be monitored by student response.
  3. The GECU department will work to encourage communication and cooperation with other academic departments. The Department of Mathematics will be particularly targeted by using the Calculus Readiness Test with students taking higher-level math. This will help place the student in a math level for which they are prepared.
    • Assessment method: Goal can be assessed by students' successful completion of math classes.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will complete their written communication skills requirements within the first year.
    • Assessment method: Goal will be assessed by students' completion of requirements.
  2. Students who do not meet entry-level criteria for a chosen major will further their educational backgrounds and obtain admission into that major.
    • Assessment method: Student completion of the requirements to change into their major will be used as an assessment method in achieving this goal.
  3. Students will complete their natural science requirement within the first year.
    • Goal will be assesssed by students' completion of requirements.
  4. Students will complete their first math course within the first year.
    • Goal will be assessed by students' completion of requirements.
