Want to learn more about the Earth’s longest day of the year on June 21, the Summer Solstice?sun1 wb

Join the Oakley STEM Center’s astronomy expert Marc Robinson and explore the mysteries of space, seasons, planets, observe the stars by telescope, and more on the evening of the longest day of the year – the summer solstice.

The free-admission event is a family-centered educational, open-house allowing visitors to experience a variety of activities and learning stations.

  • Learn about the reasons for the seasons and why we have a “longest day”!
  • Learn how to stay cool during the hot summer!
  • Learn about heat reflection and absorbtion!
  • Use solar cells, telescopes, and more!
  • Experience Operation: Intercept! An Interactive Virtual Theater Adventure starting at 7pm; shows on the half hour, last virtual space shuttle leave at 8:30pm.

Reservation Info for Parent/Guardians

  • Reservations are required, but admission is free.
  • Parent/guardians must remain on-site with children during the workshops.

Featuring John Weis of NASA's Marshall Space Fight Center

Build on Saturday and launch on Sunday!

  • This 6-hour workshop is designed for 2 to 3-person groups: 1-2 children and 1 adult family member.NASA logo wb
    • Each group builds 1 rocket together.
  • Cost: $15 | YOU KEEP THE ROCKET!

Join the Oakley STEM Center as we explore energy, motion, mechanics and natural forces using model rocketry (age appropriate for 4th through 12th graders).

Participants will discuss the underlying principles of rocket flight and NASA exploration with a NASA Aerospace Education Specialist, John Weis, as they build and launch a rocket in this two-day event.

Topics covered include:

  • speed and velocity;
  • gravitational forces;
  • potential and kinetic energy;
  • conservation of energy;
  • and Newton’s Laws of Motion!

About John Weis, AESP Specialist Marshall Space Flight Center

John Weis has been an Aerospace Education Specialist with the Aerospace Education Services Project (AESP) for 8 years and is currently stationed at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.John Weis wb

He is responsible for education outreach including professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers, student and community outreach programs and liaising with state and local education agencies in the Marshall region of Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama and Tennessee.

John earned a BS in Science and Mathematics Teaching with an emphasis in Mathematics and Physics from the Florida State University and an MS in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Scranton. Before joining NASA/AESP, he spent 10 years as a secondary science teacher in Volusia County, Florida. His areas of specialization include Math, Physics, Earth/Space Science, and Astronomy education.
