HS Exploration Descriptions

These Exploration workshops are available to High School students who will be in grades 9-12 in Fall 2010.

Autopsy a Shark!

Dates: June 8 & 9 (Tues. & Wed.)
Time: 12:30-2:30pm, both days
Fee: $50 per student ($40 workshop + $10 specimen fee)

Using dissecting techniques appropriate for advanced studies in zoology. Students will explore the anatomy of the shark and compare it to the anatomy of the perch. Students interested in careers in the health sciences are particularly encouraged to attend.

Get a Head Start for the 2011 Science & Engineering Fair

Dates: June 16, 17 & 18 (Wed., Thurs., & Fri.)
Time: 8:30-11:30am, each day
Fee: $75

Students will select a topic, begin research on the topic, and develop a design for their study. Students will be introduced to the rules and requirements for a successful entry in the annual Cumberland Plateau Regional Science & Engineering Fair.

Following the three-day workshop, TTU faculty mentors will be identified for each student. Follow-up sessions with the faculty mentors will be scheduled for fall/winter 2010-11 in order for students to have a complete exhibit ready for the March 2011 fair.

NOTE: One parent/guardian may attend the sessions with the student for no additional charge. Please indicate on Registration Form if a parent/guardian will attend.

The Longest Day of the Year

Date: June 21 (Mon.)
Time: 6-9pm
Fee: $30

Students will explore the alignment of the Sun and Earth on the longest day of the year, June 21 (also known as the summer solstice). Experience interactive software, digital recordings, and, weather permitting, viewing the Cookeville sky through a telescope.

NOTE: One parent/guardian may attend the sessions with the student for no additional charge. Please indicate on Registration Form if a parent/guardian will attend.

Build a Functional Robot

Dates: June 24 & 25 (Thurs. & Fri.)
Time:  8:30am-3pm, both days
Fee:  $100

Students will build, program and test functional robots using the STEM Center's Parallax Boe-Bot system kits. On the second day of the workshop students will have the opportunity to use their Boe-Bots in competitive challenges (i.e. races, obstacle course navigation, and more). At the end of the two-day workshop, the robots are disassembled for use by the next robotics class.
