Summer 2012 Professional Development for Teachers
Tennessee State Learning Standards-Aligned PD Workshops

 General Information

  • Sign In for all day (8:30am-3:30pm) sessions is from 8-8:30am.
  • Sign in for 1/2 day (9am-12pm) sessions is from 8:30-9am.
  • Participants in all-day sessions, 8:30am-3:30pm, receive lunch.
  • Workshop fee includes registration, consumables, and any take-home kits or resources.

Location

Parking & Entrance

  • After parking in the university commuter lots on the north side of the STEM Center (off Stadium Drive), enter via the covered walkway located at the north/main entrance of Ray Morris Hall into the lobby of the STEM Center.

Emergency Information & Photo/Video Release Form

  • If you are participating in a PD workshop, PLEASE PRINT AND COMPLETE the Emergency Information & Photo Release Form (PDF) and bring with you to sign-in the morning of your workshop. You are only required to complete your contact and emergency information.
  • The STEM Center would also like to use images of participants in PD workshops to promote these opportunities for teachers in print and online.
  • Complete the Photo/Video Release section, only if you give us permission to use your likeness in promotional materials.

 

Summer 2012 Professional Development for Teachers PreK-4th Grade
Tennessee State Learning Standards-Aligned PD Workshops

June 9 (Sat.) / 9am-12pm / $30 / Science / Grades PreK-K

Investigation Stations
PD Credit:
3 hrs
Instructors:
Martha Ramsey & Jean Webb

Experience explorations with chemistry, life science, technology and physical science for young children. Participants will rotate through a variety of stations to investigate various science concepts. Activities will focus on Tennessee state science standards for Pre-K to K. Participants will be involved in developmentally appropriate strategies to convey science process skills for young children.

June 16 (Sat.) / 9am-12pm / $30 / Science / Grades PreK-2

Inquirize Your Teaching
PD Credit: 3 hrs
Instructors: Dr. Jane Baker & Dr. Martha Howard

Turn ordinary science experiments into inquiry investigations where students ask and answer their own questions. Participants will experience an overview of inquiry instruction, participate in sample investigations and receive sample lesson plans. Workshop activities are aligned with the Framework for K-12 Science Education guidelines.

June 23 (Sat.) / 9am-12pm / $30 / Math / Grades PreK-K

Am I Supposed to Teach Algebra? Yes!
PD Credit: 3 hrs
Instructor: Dr. Jane Baker

Don’t let the new Common Core Math Standards scare you! This workshop will explore many ways to plan activities for algebra-related math in the early childhood classroom. Participants will have opportunities to interact with each other, as well as with math materials.

June 28 – 29 (Th-F) / 8:30am-3:30pm / $150 / Math / Grades 3-4

Implementing the CCSSM in 3rd – 4th Grades
PD Credit: 12 hrs / 6 per day / 2 days
Instructors:
Dr. Jane Baker, Jennifer Meadows & Leann Taylor

This interactive workshop will provide practical strategies for developing math-proficient 3rd and 4th graders as defined in the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Participants will experience an overview of the CCSSM, linkage of current teaching materials to the CCSSM, and numerous ideas for implementation of the new standards.

June 19 – 20 (Tu-W) / 8:30am-3:30pm / $150 / Math / Grades 5-6

Highlighting Common Core Content & Practices in Grades 5-6
PD Credit: 12 hrs / 6 per day / 2 days

This workshop focuses on content and practices in the Grades 5-6 common core state standards and will provide strategies for teaching both the common core and current curriculum standards during these transitional years. Active learning and hands-on manipulatives will be used.

June 21 – 22 (Th-F) / 8:30am-3:30pm / $150 / Math / Grades 7-8

Highlighting Common Core Content & Practices in Grades 7-8
PD Credit: 12 hrs / 6 per day / 2 days

This workshop focuses on content and practices/processes in the Grades 7-8 common core state standards, and also provides strategies for teaching both the common core and current curriculum standards during these transitional years. Active learning and hands-on manipulatives will be used.

June 25 – 26 (M-Tu) / 8:30am-3:30pm / $150 / Science / Grades 7-8

Underwater Robots: Using Engineering Design to Address Middle School (7-8) Science Standards

12 hrs / 6 per day / 2 days
Instructors:
Dr. Sally Pardue & Ken Hunter

During this unique workshop, teachers will experience the engineering design process as they design, fabricate, and test an underwater robot. This project can be used to effectively address embedded inquiry standards, technology/engineering standards, and a variety of physical science standards related to motion, forces, electricity, magnetism, and density. The project is based on a very relevant topic, provides a clear application of science and mathematics knowledge, is extremely hands-on, and fun!

July 9 – 13 (M-F) / 8:30am-3:30pm / $375 / Physics / Grades 8-12

Physics Boot Camp
PD Credit:
30 hrs / 6 per day / 5 days
Instructors:
Dr. Steve Robinson & Dr. Paula Engelhardt

Content and mathematical applications for high school physics are the focus of this intensive workshop. The goal of the course is to enhance physics and mathematical content understandings of current physics teachers, to prepare teachers to pass the high school Praxis II Physics Test, and add this licensure. This year the focus is on Mechanics and Conservation laws. Additional topics will be addressed in following years.

Registering with Putnam County's MY LEARNING PLAN does not automatically register you with the STEM Center programs.

Registration Information

  • Talk to your supervisor to determine which sessions apply to your In-Service requirements.
  • Check with your supervisor regarding the availability of funds for your registration.
  • You may register for more than one workshop.
  • Each teacher must register or be registered individually.
  • Pre-registration only; there is no “walk-in” registration available on the days of the workshops.

  • If your school is PAYING FOR YOUR PD with a Purchase Order and/or requires an invoice, enter the Promotional Code: SCHOOLPO. Using the promotional code means your school will be responsible for paying your PD fees (confirm with your school before using the promotional code).
  • If your school is REIMBURSING YOU and/or you are paying for PD on your own, DO NOT ENTER THE PROMOTIONAL CODE, you must enter your credit card information to complete and pay for your registration. MarketPlace accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Registration Confirmation & Refunds

  • You will receive an automatic confirmation from the MarketPlace system that your registration was received.
  • If your session does not have the necessary minimum number of participants registered by May 1, you will be contacted to determine an appropriate, alternate workshop.
  • The STEM Center will refund registration fees for any workshops that are canceled due to insufficient enrollment.
  • Refunds are not offered for workshops that “make.”

After Your PD Workshop

  • You will receive a letter after your workshop (mailed to your home or school) from the Millard Oakley STEM Center documenting your attendance and the content of the session you attended for submission for LEA.
