REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION TO TEACHER EDUCATION
The requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program will differ depending on your program path. Please be sure to follow the requirements that apply to you on the correct tab below.
STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REGISTER FOR OR OBTAIN PERMITS FOR ANY UPPER DIVISION CLASSES UNTIL THEY ARE FULLY ADMITTED TO THE TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM. A PRE-REQ/TEST CODE ERROR WILL BE GIVEN DURING REGISTRATION IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN FULLY ADMITTED.
Undergraduate Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program
All students who are pursuing teacher licensure must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. The undergraduate admission process applies to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree and transfer students that received the AS or AAS Degrees from a community college. In order to obtain full admission to the program, you must complete all requirements listed below:
- A formal application for admission to the Teacher Education Program must be filed once a student has reached 30 or more credit hours excluding ADP course credit. PLEASE COMPLETE THIS REQUIREMENT FIRST! This form is submitted online and you MUST have your TNumber to complete it.
- Complete the Interview Request Form and the Interview Process. To schedule an interview, please complete the interview request form. This form is submitted online and you MUST have your TNumber to complete it. (If a date is not available that you can attend, please keep checking back for more dates. Do not complete the form until you are sure you can attend on the date you select.)
- Complete the Background Check Authorization Form.
- Complete the required Background Check through IdentoGO by MorphoTrust USA
- Complete the Disposition Request Form for three disposition assessments. This form is submitted online and you MUST have your TNumber to complete it. The three dispositions MUST come from the following individuals. You will need an accurate email address for each person listed.
- Academic Advisor
- College Level Education Instructor (Ex. FOED 2011 or EDPY 2200)
- College Instructor in Major Teaching Field (Ex. History, Math, English, etc.)
- Minimum Overall GPA of 2.50 (No exceptions)
- Complete the following class requirements:
- ENGL 1010 and 1020 or equivalent with a C or higher
- FOED 1820/1822 or equivalent with a B or higher. (Note: You are exempt from this class if you had one of the below major based equivalents)
- FOED 2011 or equivalent with a B or higher
- For ARED- ARED 2020
- For HEC- HEC 1000
- For AGED- AGED 2120
- For MUED- MUED 1820
- For EXPW - FOED 2011 and EXPW 1021
- Meet Testing Requirements(Multiple options below)
- Praxis I Exam (When taking the Praxis test, please be sure to add TTU as a score recipient. We must have these on file. Our School ID is: 1804)
- Reading (minimum score of 174)
- Math (minimum score of 173)
- Writing (minimum score of 173)
- Codes for the PAPER-BASED testing for Praxis I are as follows:
- Reading—0710
- Writing—0720
- Math—0730
- Codes for the COMPUTER-BASED testing for Praxis I are as follows
- Reading—5710
- Writing—5720
- Math—5730
- If you are required to take the Praxis I and are having difficulty passing, a Praxis I Waiver may be available in certain cases if you meet the waiver requirements—check with your Community College to see if the option is available for the AST Degree.
- You are exempt from taking the Praxis I exam if you have either of the following scores:
- ACT (Composite of 22)
- SAT (Score of 1020)
AST Degree Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program
All students who are pursuing teacher licensure must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program. Students who completed the AST (Associate Science in Teaching) Degree through a community college will have completed some requirements previously in order to obtain their AST degree. In order to complete full admission to the Teacher Education Program at Tennessee Tech University students must show proof of having been awarded the AST Degree (this will be listed on official transcripts) as well as complete the requirements listed below:

Post-bac Requirements for Admission to the Teacher Education Program
All students (including non-degree seeking) who are pursuing teacher licensure must be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program. A post-baccalaureate student is someone who already has a bachelors or higher degree. Post-baccalaureates are allowed to take up to 12 undergraduate hours during their first attending semester OR up to 9 graduate hours during their first attending semester without being fully admitted to the program. The application, interview process, and background check are required BEFORE registration of the first attending semester. A post-baccalaureate student will have only ONE semester to complete ALL requirements for admission to the Teacher Education program. - If undergraduate GPA is below a 2.50 you must complete 12 undergraduate hours OR 9 graduate hours with a 3.0 during your first semester of attendance to obtain full admission status to the Teacher Education Program
- Meet Testing Requirements (Multiple options below). Post-baccalaureate students who are enrolled with the Graduate School MUST have one of the following tests:
- MAT (minimum score of 372)
- GRE (900/4.0)
- Post-baccalaureate students who are enrolled as undergraduate students have the option of taking the MAT, GRE, or the tests listed below
- Praxis I Exam (When taking the Praxis test, please be sure to add TTU as well as your community college as a score recipient. We must have these on file. The TTU School ID Code is: 1804)
