Tennessee Department of Education Launches New Teacher Recruitment Web Site
In Time for School Systems’ Hiring Season
This week, the Tennessee Department of Education is launching a new Tennessee Teacher Employment Resource Web site that licensed teachers in Pre-K through Grade 12 can use to learn about teaching positions in each of the state’s 136 public school systems. The site, located at http://www.tnteachingjobs.org, is a public service of the Department of Education and free of charge to candidates and Tennessee public school systems. The Department will encourage all school districts to post job openings on this site, especially for hard to staff positions and subject areas.
Authorized school system human resources personnel will use a password-protected area of the Web site to search the database of candidates when they are looking for licensed teachers and specialists. They can also post teaching positions on the site as they become available. This Web site will serve as a great resource for districts seeking to meet the requirement of advertising job vacancies on a state or nationally recognized Internet website prior to issuing a teacher a permit. Currently, there are no plans to list openings for school district administrators and principals on this site.
When school systems post their positions online, the Web-based teacher application system will search the database of Personal Profiles and alert school system personnel of potential matches. The school system personnel will be encouraged to report teachers who are hired as a result of the new Web site, and Department of Education administrators can run reports to evaluate the Web site’s success.
Using this Web-based system, teachers can create a detailed Personal Profile that showcases their licensure information, work history and other relevant information. They can also search a jobs database of current openings in Tennessee public schools to find positions they are qualified to hold. Candidates can indicate their preferences for geographic regions of the state and/or specific school systems they want to teach in, and they can also indicate what sort of community environment they prefer (urban, rural, suburban, etc.).
Because most school systems often do not know their hiring needs for the coming school year until April or May, the site is coming online at a time when most school systems have openings to post. It is also the time of year that many new and experienced teachers begin looking for teaching jobs.
The new site will replace an older Web site (Teach in Tennessee) that enabled school systems to see lists of potential candidates who had created profiles online, but did not allow the school system to sort candidates by qualifications. The improved site’s user-friendly interface and easy-to-remember URL will help Tennessee compete against other states for high-need teachers looking for jobs.
During the month of May, Tennessee will concentrate on getting district personnel trained and accustomed to using the new site. Then, once a sufficient number of positions are posted on the site, the Department of Education will turn its focus to promoting the site to qualified teacher candidates and related service personnel.
The new Web site will have an online User Guide as well as a Frequently Asked Questions section designed to help users new to the site. Technical assistance will also be available by phone at 1-888-266-9611 and by E-mail at tndoe.support@desotosystems.com. Hours of operation for the telephone support will be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (CST), Monday through Friday and weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (CST).
