| Think
of Celtic music, and Spain probably isn’t the first country
that comes to mind — but listening to the traditional Spanish
Celtic music of Llan de Cubel could change that.
The six-member ensemble whose performances are
based on the traditional music of Asturies, the Celtic region of
northern Spain, will be in concert at 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22,
in the Multipurpose Room.
Steve Winick of Dirty Linen Magazine
describes their sound as “delicately balanced, but they manage
it beautifully — upbeat, bright and bouncy.”
The group gets its distinctive sound from acoustic
instruments indigenous to the region, such as fiddle, flute, accordion
and especially the Asturian bagpipes.
Llan de Cubel’s primarily instrumental repertoire
is punctuated by an occasional song, which includes some traditional
lyrics but is made up mostly of contemporary texts set to music
with traditional Asturian melodies.
A Center State event, the show is free and open
to the public.
