Ground and street excavations will begin after spring commencement
as Facilities continues its work on improving the campus chilled
water distribution system. And while Facilities is making every
effort to minimize traffic detours and other inconveniences, a few
road closings and cooling water outages are inevitable.
If you're coordinating a summer camp or other
event bringing visitors to campus, you'll want to make special note
of the following.
Two new lines are planned, and both will require
temporary street closings as workers excavate trenches that will
be 5 feet wide by 5 feet deep.
The first line, the "South Loop" (see
map below), has two segments. A replacement line between Marshall
Hall and the new residence hall is the first and shortest, and won't
require street closings. The second line runs from Maddux-McCord
residence halls across Peachtree and up 7th before turning left
onto the Main Quad. Street closings will be necessary for this excavation.
The second line, or "North Loop" (see
map below), is a straight shot from the intersection of University
Drive and McGee Boulevard all the way up University Drive to the
back of the Roaden University Center. To minimize traffic detours
and sidewalk closings, workers will be excavating from manhole to
manhole along University Drive, and bridges will be installed where
applicable. Some cooling water outages in select buildings will
be necessary and will be scheduled when the contractor arrives on
campus.
The North Loop project is being funded from energy
savings through the Tennessee Board of Regents' Performance Contracting
Program. The South Loop is a TBR Capital Maintenance-funded project.
Major street closing phases of the project are
scheduled to end before the start of fall semester and have been
planned to allow for as little disruption as possible. Updates on
specific excavation dates will be posted as soon as the construction
schedule firms up and the notice to proceed is issued to the contractors.
