Now that we're past the official average frost date for our region,
it's relatively safe to start adding potted plants to your flower
beds or porch. And you can find them at Horticulture's annual spring
plant sale, set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday, May 6, at the Shipley
Farm greenhouses on 12th St.
The one-day-only event features hanging baskets
of boston ferns and spider plants, as well as miscellaneous foliage,
including colorful rex begonias and a "blue angel" streptocarpus.
Plants sell for $1 a potted inch, and pots are available in 4-,
6-, 8- and 10-inch diameters.
Also available are a variety of landscape trees
and shrubs, including korean and common boxwood, wisteria and hollies,
as well as washington hawthorne, kentucky coffee trees, americanhophornbean,
red oaks, persimmon and ornamental sumac. Trees and shrubs are selling
either at-cost or at less than than nursery rate.
Checks preferred. Proceeds go toward the program's
annual competition travel expenses, as well as greenhouse operating
costs.
