The Center for the Management, Utilization and Protection of Water
Resources is sponsoring a campus broadcast of the American Water
Works Association web cast “Down the Drain and Into the Water
Supply: The Facts About Endocrine Disruptors, Pharmaceuticals, and
Personal Care Products in Drinking Water.” The broadcast takes
place from noon to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 4, in Prescott 225.
Faculty, staff and students, and regional water
utility personnel are invited to attend free of charge. Martha J.M.
Wells, environmental chemist with the Water Center, is coordinating
the on-campus viewing of the presentation.
Over the past decade, endocrine disrupting compounds
and pharmaceuticals and personal care products have received growing
attention from the scientific community, regulatory agencies and
the public at large. Results of several recent studies indicate
that a large number of these compounds are present in the aquatic
environment as a result of the discharge of wastewater effluents
and agricultural runoff. Public interest in these compounds continues
to increase, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has been
mandated to conduct a screening program for them.
The web cast will provide information on the regulatory
background, the source and occurrence of emerging contaminants in
U.S. waters, and analytical methods and treatment options. Presenters
include Djanette Khiari, AWWA Research Foundation research management
project manager; J. Alan Roberson, AWWA director of Regulatory Affairs;
Dana Kolpin of the U.S. Geological Survey; and Shane Snyder of the
Southern Nevada Water Authority.
To facilitate planning, contact Wells at 6123
or mjmwells by Tuesday,
May 3, if you plan to attend.
