Birdwell, History, is participating in the 2005 Cinema
Memphis Retrospective, set for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 7-9, at the Cannon
Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis. This year's
festival focuses on the films of director Howard Hawks. Birdwell,
author of Celluloid Heroes: The Warner Bros. Campaign Against
Nazism (New York University Press, 1999), will be introducing
and discussing the final film in the showing, Hawks' "Sergeant
York," on Oct. 9. Birdwell will also appear that morning on
"Live at 9," the morning news program of Memphis station
WREG-TV, along with two of York's children, George Edward and Betsy
Ross.
