Michael Birdwell, History, is participating in the 2005 Cinema Memphis Retrospective, set for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 7-9, at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Memphis. This year's festival focuses on the films of director Howard Hawks. Birdwell, author of Celluloid Heroes: The Warner Bros. Campaign Against Nazism (New York University Press, 1999), will be introducing and discussing the final film in the showing, Hawks' "Sergeant York," on Oct. 9. Birdwell will also appear that morning on "Live at 9," the morning news program of Memphis station WREG-TV, along with two of York's children, George Edward and Betsy Ross.
