Sign-ups for the second session of the Tech Kids Club after-school
program are set for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 24 and 25, in Memorial
Gym.
The six-week program, started earlier this year
by the Department of Health and Physical Education to help children
learn to enjoy being more active, recently completed its first session.
Children in grades K-4 can sign up for the program’s
second session at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, and children in grades
5-8 can sign up at 3:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Two-hour sessions from 3:30 to 5:30 on Mondays
and Wednesdays following sign-ups will provide a continually evolving
variety of developmentally appropriate activities for participants
in the younger age category, while sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays
will focus on activities for children in the older age category.
Health and Physical Education students lead the activities, which
may include swimming, dance, golf, soccer, tennis, team handball,
exercise on virtual game equipment and other games and sports.
The program was started after a recent study found
nearly 20 percent of all Putnam County students to be at risk for
obesity, high blood pressure and other conditions related to inactivity.
The cost of the six-week program is $60 per child,
and payment must be made in full at the time of registration. Discounts
are given for enrolling multiple family members.
