The
university was well represented at the 116th meeting of the Tennessee
Academy of Science, held recently at Austin Peay State University.
Our professors presented four discussions at the
event and a student presented one. They included:
• “Gas Diffusion in Polystyrene Foam:
A Multi-scale Approach” by Chemical Engineering professors
Joseph Biernacki and Donald Visco, along with two student authors,
D.M. Kirby and P. Kannan
• “Evolution Visits Tennessee, 1873-1878”
by History Professor George Webb
• “Analysis of Urban Sprawl In Cookeville,
Tennessee, Using GIS Technology” by Geoscience major Brian
O’Neil Whitworth
• “Effect of Land Use on Water Chemistry
and Macroinvertebrates in Three Watersheds” by Biology Professor
Bradford Cook, Chemistry Professor John Harwood and Earth Sciences
Professor Peter Li, who worked and presented with instructors from
Cookeville High School and Harvard University as well
• And “What Is the Title of This Talk?”
by Peter Li, who also presided over the geology, geography and history
of science series of presentations.
Two students made poster presentations in the
geology and geography category. Mark Ziska presented “Waste
Water Treatment Plant Site Analysis Along Cane Creek in Putnam County.”
Whitworth presented “Analysis of Microcrack Density in Folded
Quartz Arenite Near Keyser, West Virginia.”
Chemistry Professor Jeff Boles, Biology professors
John Harris and J. Michael Redding, and History Professor George
Webb are all members of the TAS Executive Committee, and Boles,
Harris and Webb also serve in various positions of TAS standing
committees.
