George
Webb, History, will present two papers at the Southeastern
Section of the Geological Society of America in Savannah, Ga., on
March 29-30. Approximately 750 geoscientists are expected to attend
the meeting hosted at Georgia Southern University. Webb will present
"The Historical Development of Evolutionary Concepts,"
which details the development of evolutionary explanations during
the 19th and 20th centuries. He also will present "Geology
in the Reconstructed South: The 1877 AAAS Meeting in Nashville."
Also at the meeting, student Joshua Gentry will present a poster
entitled "Mapping High-Terrace Deposits in Karst Terrain, East-Central
Tennessee," a poster co-presented by Hugh Mills
and Michael Harrison, Earth Sciences.
Earl Hutchison, English/Journalism,
will be the first guest speaker in the Author Series sponsored by
the Putnam County Library Friends. His presentation will be “A
Reflection on Memoirs,” which will focus on his memoir, Growing
Up on the Illinois Prairie during the Great Depression and the Coal
Mine Wars: A Portrayal of the Way Life Was. The program will
be on Sunday, March 25, at 3 p.m. in the Lower Meeting Room of the
Putnam County Library and is free and open to the public.
Michael Birdwell and Calvin
Dickinson of History and Homer Kemp, English,
will discuss their book, Upper Cumberland Historic Architecture,
Sunday, April 1, at 3 p.m. at the second in the Author series sponsored
by the Putnam County Library Friends.
