Window on the World set for tomorrow

WOW, Tennessee Tech University's annual international festival, will have non-stop entertainment, much of it new and interactive, on two stages tomorrow, April 14.

Opening the show on the Multi-Purpose Room stage is Greensleeves, a new Renaissance music group directed by TTU assistant professor Valerie Austin. After the presentation of the Mandala Award, Mary Moran's Irish Step Dancers take the stage and the floor, engaging audience members in lively movement.

New to WOW are accordionists Ken Nicole and his partner, Mary. Nationally-known — Ken has played with Al Yankovic — the duo promise both instrumental and vocal German music. Other first-time WOW performers include the Chinese Culture Club, Nikites Greek dancing, and a world-class highland dancer to accompany Jay and Cindy Dawson on Scottish bagpipe and drum.

Returning WOW favorites promise new elements too — costumes for Hispano Americas and additional members for Pacific Xpressions island dancers and Viva la Musica mariachi band. Local students performing include the Prescott Middle School chorus, TTU Indian students who will perform classical and folk dances, and TTU senior Matt Nickens with his Meherrin Indian tribal dance.

And the audience will have plenty of opportunities to join the show. The audience can learn to dance like a Chinese lion, follow Latin American and West African beats, or add drums to the latter. Deby Rossie will teach dances of several cultures. And moving should come naturally with the Seed 'n Soil Reggae Band.

Two members of Cumberland Guitar Society, specializing in flamenco and Spanish guitar, will perform and then invite audience members to take a turn.

For a schedule of entertainment, check the web site at tntech.edu/wow; please note that times are approximate. The second stage will be outdoors on the Roaden University Center South Patio with the bocce ball demo on the North Lawn.

Window on the World is an international festival celebrating cultural diversity and global harmony. WOW is funded primarily by Center Stage and is sponsored by the Globalization Committee of the College of Business, with special grants from Cummins Filtration, Wal-mart, Sam's Club, the Tennessee Arts Commission and National Endowment for the Arts.

This fun, free, family event takes place Saturday, April 14, from 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Roaden University Center.
