New text messaging service to send emergency alerts to personal cell phones

The campus will soon implement a new emergency warning system that will alert students, faculty and staff of an emergency situation with a cell phone text message.

The system will ONLY be used for emergency announcements or when it is being tested. It will not be used for general university announcements or messages.

While we will continue to use the other notification systems we already have in place (see the TTU Emergency Response Plan for a summary), the text messaging system will provide one more way to alert faculty and staff at any location through the cell phone.

To be included in this system, employees must provide their cell phone information as described below. To ensure the accuracy and the security of this private information, those who choose to participate must input the information themselves in the Banner Self Service information system.

Follow these instructions:

1. Log in to Banner Self Service – from www.tntech.edu, click on the “Faculty & Staff” link, and then under Electronic Resources, click the 2007 Banner Self Service link.

2. To log in, use your employee T-number provided to you by Human Resources and your PIN. (If you have trouble logging in, please contact Human Resources at 3034 for assistance.)

3. Click on the “Personal Information” link, then “Update E-mail Addresses.”

4. In the “Type of E-mail to Insert” field, select “Cell Text Message Address,” then click Submit.

5. In the “E-mail address” field, enter your 10-digit mobile number (include the area code without any dashes or spaces separating numbers), the @ sign, and the text message suffix from your cellular service provider (see the list for examples below). Your entry should look like this: 1234567890@vtext.com, for example (if Verizon is the service provider).

Here is a list of the more common service providers and their text message addresses:

Cingular: mobilenumber@cingularme.com
Nextel: mobilenumber@messaging.nextel.com
Sprint: mobilenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
T-Mobile: mobilenumber@tmomail.net
USCellular: mobilenumber@email.uscc.net
Verizon: mobilenumber@vtext.com
Virgin Mobile: mobilenumber@vmobl.com

5. Do not type anything into the “comments” field.

6. Click Submit.

Students will be asked to submit the same type of information through the Eagle Online Information system.

Each semester a test emergency text message will be sent to everyone who has provided his/her cell phone information. All tests and emergency announcements from this system will come from an address titled Emergency@tntech.edu and will CLEARLY indicate any TESTS of the system as such to help avoid confusion.

For more information, contact TTUNews@tntech.edu.
