Roads close July 24 for Nursing construction; RUC North Patio renovation begins

Road work for nursing building to close 7th Street for August

The portion of 7th Street between the Main Quad and new Nursing and Health Services building site will be closed beginning July 24 through Sept. 1.

University and city planning officials met this week to finalize plans for that section of the street, which includes the block between Mahler and Peachtree Avenues.

The entire block will be closed while roadwork is completed by the city.

The road will become a three-lane street with an island circle in front of the Nursing building entrance. The island and a crosswalk will help slow traffic in the area to help students crossing the street.

In addition to street paving, city crews will also be adding new sidewalks and street lights to match those on Dixie Ave.

Renovation of RUC's North Patio begins

Renovation work has begun on the brick patio on the north side of the Roaden University Center. The patio is cleared, and the parking area on the northeast side of the building has been blocked off for equipment, so visitor spaces are not available on that side of the building.

The sidewalk to the patio steps is barricaded, and the RUC entrances from the North Patio are for emergency exit only while work is being completed.

Workers will tear out the old patio and replace it with a rubber membrane and concrete pavers. The new patio materials should end the problems with leaks from that area, which serves as a roof to part of the RUC's ground floor. Access for people with disabilities will also be added to the patio.

The entire project is expected to last until November.
