More than two weeks after the devastation caused by tornadoes, Macon County is still calling for volunteers to help in recovery efforts.
"Our thoughts and prayers went out immediately to those who suffered losses, but now is the time our university can step up our efforts to help in the relief, recovery and cleanup," said President Bob Bell.
Faculty, staff, administrators and students willing to help in cleanup efforts are asked to meet at 9 a.m. this Saturday in front of Derryberry Hall. Transportation will be provided, and volunteers can expect to return to campus by 3 p.m. Volunteers should call 372-3394 by 3 p.m. this Friday so organizers can make travel accommodations.
Susan Elkins, vice president for Extended Programs and Regional Development, traveled with Bell to Macon County last week to present a $1,000 aid check on behalf of the university. Last week, TTU's Academic Development Office collected items, which the Athletics Department delivered. Elkins says organizers are overwhelmed with donated items and are asking for monetary donations instead.

University administrators are currently aware of one student who lost a parent to the disaster. President Bell asks that you contact his office at x3241 if you are aware of loss of life or property by a Tech family member—either an employee or student—or his or her immediate family members. |
