Project: From theory to practice
Descriptor: These activities can be used on an individual basis or as a whole across the length of a semester.

Activities

1. Bursting Chloroplasts Pillows
Summary: Students use a hands-on approach and to burst the chloroplasts in various parts of plants to create a design.  With experimentation and higher level thinking skills the students can predict and plan their design for a pillow to match their room.

2. Quilts for Kids or Linus Project
Summary: Students make quilts of their own design and donate to children taken from homes due to Meth or to the Linus project.  This could be used as a FCCLA STAR Event in either Focus on Children or Community Service National Program in Action.

3. Quilting Story
Summary: Students make a quilt block of their own rag coat design.  This will use math skills and tessellations.

4. Quiet Books
Summary: Students use a variety of different stitches to make a quiet book that they have written and designed on their own following your guidelines for the book.

5. Sample Portfolio with written directions by students
Summary:  Students make an example of various construction techniques and then, write directions on how to do it if telling a beginning seamstress how to do it.

6. Swatch Portfolio
Summary: Students collect fabric swatches and display them with their trade name and generic name. Each sample must have fibers identified, correct care of fibers, and suggested use of fibers.  This can be done with giving students a list of fabrics to find samples or it could be done with students required to find a certain number of fibers with no more than 2 of each fiber.
