Mutes
The TTU chapter of T.U.B.A. manufactures these mutes at the lowest price available as a service to our fellow euphoniumists and tubists. All mute prices include shipment,in the U.S.A., and include a thirty day satisfaction guarantee.
Most instruments will require some outward adjustments of the main tuning slide when the mute is inserted. That is, the mute will frequently sharpen the instrument. A number of factors are involved here and each case will be slightly different. Therefore, it is very important that you "tune" your mute. We would suggest that you check your open instrument very carefully on the best tuner available. After the open instrument is tuned properly, then insert the mute and determine how much adjustment, if any, might be required. In the future, to the extent that your playing remains consistent, whenever you have a muted passage you will know how much adjustment to make with your main tuning slide. These mutes have proven to be quite consistent once the main slide is adjusted. Don't forget, after playing a muted passage return the slide to "home base."
Depending on the make of your instrument and bell size, sometimes the corks have to be adjusted. You might have to sand the corks down some or you might even find it advantageous to move the corks. If you need additional cork let us know and we will be glad to send you some.
Tuba Mutes
The Euphonium Mute (left):
Fits most upright- (and some oval) bell euphoniums: Besson, Wilson, Yamaha, Hirsbrunner, etc.
The Large Tuba Mute (middle):
Fits most medium to medium/large upright-bell tubas; Conn, King, Besson, Mirafone, Meinl-Weston. Hirsbrunner, Sanders, Alexander, Deprins, Rudy Meinl, Kalison, etc.
The Small Tuba Mute (right):
Fits most F tubas; Alexander, Mirafone, Meinl Weston, B & S, etc., and most junior BB flat tubas.
If for any reason any of the screws, rivets, or seams on your mute begin to "rattle," we would recommend using a liquid glue on the offending area.
