†The student must complete a minimum of 31 upper-division mathematics hours including one sequence from MATH 351-2, 411-2, 431-2, and 453-4, one sequence from MATH 421-2, 425-6, 435-6, and 447-8, and one additional sequence to be chosen from either list. Students not completing MATH 447-8 must complete MATH 412.
The Department offers courses to meet the needs of the students with varying career objectives. Four options, actuarial, applied mathematics, pure mathematics, and statistics, are available. The following are courses recommended (but not required) for students in each option.
Actuarial: MATH 307-8, 421-2, 447-8, 454, ECON 201-2, ACCT 211-2, FIN 200, 361, DS 281, 362. Students who wish to prepare for the second Actuarial Exam should obtain permission from the Graduate School to take MATH 627.
Applied Mathematics: MATH 381, 412, 451, 454. The sequence requirement should be met by choosing two sequences from the second group. It is recommended that the student minor in Computer Science.
Pure Mathematics: MATH 352, 412, 431, 435-6, 454.
Statistics: MATH 307-8, 421, 447-8, 454.
Requirements for a Minor in Math: In the College of Arts and Sciences, a minor consists of at least 18 semester hours, including 6 upper division hours. However, the requirements of 6 upper-division hours is waived for a mathematics minor if MATH 181-2, MATH 281, and 5 hours in mathematics course numbered above 281 are completed.
