FOREIGN LANGUAGES -- FRENCH (FREN)


Students who begin their college French studies at the intermediate level and who complete FREN 2010-2020 with an average of at least 2.0 in those courses will, upon request, receive credit for FREN 1010-1020 with a grade of "S." This provision does not apply to anyone who takes a proficiency test at the 2000 level for credit.

Courses used to satisfy high school deficiencies cannot be used toward completion of degree requirements.

FREN 1010-1020. Elementary French I & II. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 1010 or equivalent is prerequisite to 1020. Essentials of French, developing listening and reading comprehension, oral and written communication and cultural understanding.

FREN 2010. Transition to Intermediate French. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 1020 or equivalent. Continuation of the essentials of French, developing listening and reading comprehension, oral and written communication and cultural understanding begun in 1010-1020.  Review as necessary.

FREN 2020. Intermediate French. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 2010 or equivalent. Expansion of French language study, building on the fundamentals of French acquired in 1010, 1020 and 2010.

FREN 2510. French Culture and Civilization. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
No background in French required. This course is taught in English. Sophomore status or consent of instructor required. Introduction to French cultural and intellectual history, geography and diversity, arts and the political and social structures and characteristics of France today. Credit will not be give for both FREN 2510 and FREN 3510.

FREN 3010. Composition. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 2020 or equivalent. Advanced grammar and composition and mastery of idiomatic expressions. Required for majors.

FREN 3040. Conversational French. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor. Discussion in French of current events and life in France. Development of vocabulary and native speech patterns. Recommended for majors.

FREN 3100. French Phonetics. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.  Detailed analysis of the significant features of the French sound system, intonation patterns and graphic representations of phonemes.

FREN 3110-3120. Survey of French Literature I & II. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.  Literature of France from its earliest development to the present day. Required for majors.

FREN 3200. Business French. Lec. 3. Credit. 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.  Business vocabulary, readings and conversations in French on various business topics and on culture as it affects business interactions and practices in social and formal situations. Required for majors in World Cultures and Business who have a concentration in French.

FREN 3510. France: The Country & the People. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
No background in French required. Introduction in English to the history, arts, geography, and government of France, and to the social characteristics of the French people.

FREN 4100 (5100). Advanced Listening. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.  Development of listening acuity and general comprehension of commercially produced as well as authentic spoken texts.

In each of the following minicourses the student does independent study on the topic chosen. The reading assignments are discussed individually with the instructor during mutually convenient meetings each semester. A student may choose one or more of the courses in a combination of his or her own choice. Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.

FREN 4600 (5600). Middle Ages & 16th Century Literature. Sem. 1. Credit 1.
Selections from one or more of: La Chanson de Roland or other epics; Rabelais, Montaigne.

FREN 4610 (5610). 17th Century Literature. Sem. 1. Credit 1.
Selections from one or more of: Pascal, Corneille, Racine, Moliere.

FREN 4620 (5620). 18th Century Literature. Sem. 1. Credit 1.
Selections from one or more of: Voltaire.

FREN 4630 (5630). 19th Century Literature. Sem. 1. Credit 1.
Selections from one or more of: Balzac, Stendhal, Lamartine, Vigny, Hugo, Musset.

FREN 4640 (5640). 20th Century Literature. Sem. 1. Credit 1.
Selections from one or more of: Proust, Mauriac, Malraux, Camus, Sartre.

FREN 4810 (5810). Special Topics in French. Lec. 3. Credit 3.
Special topics in the French.

FREN 4910. Directed Studies in French. Read. 1-6. Credit 1-6 per semester. Maximum 16.
Prerequisite: FREN 3010 or equivalent, or consent of instructor.  Concentrated readings in areas of special interest. Available to French majors on an individual basis, with consent of departmental chairperson.

FREN 4920. Senior Capstone. Ind. 3. Credit 3.
Prerequisite: Senior standing, completion of at least 21 credit hours in the core courses for the major. Students will work individually, under the guidance of a faculty member, to create a portfolio and prepare a presentation to faculty and other students. In this course, students will integrate, enhance, and demonstrate the knowledge and skills learned during their undergraduate education in the areas of: speaking, listening comprehension, reading, writing and cultural literacy in the target language.
