Residence Halls

Tennessee Tech has 16 residence halls providing accommodations for approximately 2,500 students. Of these halls, 13 are co-educational, two are male-only and one is female-only. Rooms are designed for double occupancy; however, a few small single rooms are available. Housing is also available for students with disabilities. Residence hall rooms are furnished with basic furnishings as well as many amenities. The amenities include free laundry facilities, expanded basic cable services, voice mail to accompany their local telephone service, ResNet connection for each occupancy, and access to in-house residential life channel that both provides both information and first run movies on a daily basis. Many advantages and benefits can be associated with residence hall life: educational benefits, special in-hall programming (i.e. study skills, time and stress management, resume writing, diversity programs, and general social programming), enhanced social activities, live-in paraprofessional student staff, convenience to campus facilities and academic programs. Other advantages include meeting new people, exploring opportunities, and being more involved with campus life. Study after study of college students across the nation consistently shows that students who live in campus housing have higher grade point averages and are more likely to graduate than students living at home or off campus. At Tennessee Tech the grade point average of residence hall students, by academic class, has been superior to the grade point average of non-residence hall students.

The Office of Residential Life, in conjunction with academic areas, provides special interest housing. Currently, programs exist for business majors, engineering majors, honors program members, first-time college freshmen, international students, and students majoring in foreign languages and/or world cultures and business. The Residential Life staff along with program mentors will provide opportunities for students to assist one another, both academically and socially. Activities may include faculty involvement programs, study groups, advanced technology resources, academic support programs, and social support programs. Simply indicate your special interest housing option on your housing application and submit the completed application, along with your pre-payment, to the Office of Residential Life. We also encourage you to contact the department responsible for the specialty area to learn more about assignment to the appropriate residence hall.

University policy requires students to live in residence halls until all available space has been assigned beginning with freshmen and proceeding through he academic classification: sophomore, junior, and senior. Based on current available space, the University residence requirement places an emphasis on students who have not completed four semesters of college coursework post high school graduation. The basis for waivers and exceptions for living in the residence halls are: (1) students who have completed four semesters of college coursework post high school graduation; (2) students commuting from parent and/or guardian residency which is within a 50 mile radius; (3) students living with immediate relatives who are permanent residents - specifically identified as grandparents, brothers or sisters who are not enrolled at the university - within a 50 mile radius; (4) students participating in academic internship programs; (5) married students; (6) students with physical and/or emotional disabilities verified by a licensed physician; (7) emergency release granted by the Office of Residential Life.

PLEASE NOTE: The signing of a housing agreement obligates the student to fulfill the terms and conditions of the agreement for the duration of the agreement. The residence hall agreement can be signed for one semester or the entire academic year. A Fall only agreement can be re-newed for the following Spring Semester.

Tech Village Apartments

Tennessee Tech also offers a 304-unit apartment complex, Tech Village, providing housing accommodations for married students, single students with child(ren), graduate students, students with disabilities, senior undergraduate students, and faculty/staff. Each apartment has a furnished kitchen, expanded basic cable services, voice mail to accompany their local telephone service, a ResNet connection, and access to in-house residential life channel which both provides both information and first run movies on a daily basis. Occupants will pay for electric utilities. A community center is located in the center of the complex housing meeting rooms, ice machine, and complex office. A laundry facility is also located in the complex providing free laundry services to all residents.

General

Students interested in living on campus - residence halls or Tech Village - must submit a completed application along with their pre-payment. As assignments are made by the date of application and deposit, it is important for you to return the completed application and pre-payment as soon as possible. Steps will be taken to honor your preference as indicated on your application; however, room change time periods are made available during specific times of each semester. The Office of Residential Life will confirm receipt of your application and pre-payment via e-mail or letter. You will be notified of your residence hall assignment for Fall Semester by the third week of July, Spring Semester by the third week of December, and Summer Session by the first week of May. You will be notified of your Tech Village Apartment assignment based on your requested date of occupancy and availability of apartment. Tech Village applicants are not guaranteed an apartment assignment; therefore, you should look into other housing options in the event an apartment does not become available.
